Consumer Affairs Minister Shahrir Samad was quoted saying the bulk of the subsidies would go for a new octane 95 fuel for use in most vehicles, while a higher octane petrol for luxury cars and SUVs would get less state support. According to the New Straits Times, Shahrir said the government would save costs by mainly subsidising only one type of fuel. It currently subsidises two types, octane 92 and octane 97.

Malaysia’s price-control system which is designed to suppress the cost of essential goods is “a joke”, the new domestic trade minister said according to a report Monday.
But the ministry assures consumers that their interests would be taken care of with the introduction of new mechanisms.
Stating, “we will turn everything inside out,” new minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said that the Prime Minister had told all ministers to be prepared to do anything to make things better in the country.
“Whatever we do, we must ensure there is abundant and sufficient supply (of consumer goods),” he told reporters here on Monday after taking over as minister from Datuk Shafie Apdal at the ministry.

Menteri Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna, Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad berkata, walaupun ramai menyedari kewujudan AFTA menerusi pengecualian tarif produk asing tertentu sejak 2003, namun masih ada menganggap barang keperluan tempatan terbaik hanya boleh diperoleh dari sempadan negara.
“Although many are aware of AFTA, a comprehensive program of regional tariff reduction, which has already been in existence since 2003, Malaysia keeps thinking of its boundary only in getting goods for its consumers,” Malaysian national news agency Bernama quoted Shahrir as saying.
We are labouring under the belief that Malaysia is a big market whereas our domestic market is actually quite small, so it is easy for a few businessmen and manufacturers to control it.
We may think that in exchange for this control of the market, we will get reasonable prices, but for all we know the supply may be better if we open up the market.
